Tibet Ganden Monastery Deers turning Dharma wheel Postcard Affiliate icon

Postcard: Deers turning the wheel - The exquisite deer and wheel motifs on the roof are early symbols of Buddhism. Both allude to Sakyamuni's first sermon, in which he "turned the wheel of the Dharma," in a deer park in Benares. The deer and wheel symbols were prominent in early Buddhism, when followers were reluctant to depict the Buddha. Ganden Monastery or Ganden Namgyeling is one of the "great three" Gelug university monasteries of Tibet. It is in Dagzê County, Lhasa. The other two are Sera Monastery and Drepung Monastery. Ganden Monastery was founded in 1409 by Je Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelug order. The monastery was destroyed after 1959, but has since been partially rebuilt. Ganden is 40 kilometres (25 mi) northeast of Lhasa at the top of Wangbur Mountain, Dagzê County at an altitude of 4,300m. Travel/Adventure series - Tibet & The Himalayas.
