The Kuroiwa's Ground Gecko (also know as the Ryukyu Eyelid Gecko) only live on the Okinawa Islands and Tokunoshima of the Amami Islands in Japan. They are different to most species of geckos as they live on the ground of sub-tropical forests and have no specialised toe pads. Geckos are extremely vital to the health of ecosystems as they eat vast quantities of insects. Endangered due to habitat clearing, especially during World War 2 and the trading of geckos on the black market. Geckos are also threatened by introduced predators such as mongoose, weasel and feral cats. Buy gecko merchandise and 25% of the sales are donated to animal welfare orgs.
