Joseph Mallord William Turner, known as J.M.W. Turner, was an 18th century / 19th century British landscape painter of the 18th and 19th centuries known for his luminous, almost abstract quality paintings. He was known as the “Painter of Light,” as he created scenes of luminous imagery using brilliant colors. His works -- watercolors, oil paintings and engravings -- are now regarded as a predecessor to Impressionism.
