Celebrating Female Artists Hilma af Klint was a late 19th century / early 20th century Swedish artist whose paintings are considered among the first abstract works known in Western art history. She was the trailblazer for abstract art. Her work predates the first purely abstract compositions by Kandinsky and others. Klint's paintings were profoundly inspired by spiritism, especially the Theosophical Movement, and were a visual representation of deeply spiritual ideas.
