This is a digitally enhanced print of a ca. 1900 embroidered cotton square intended as a cushion cover, with a vertically and horizontally mirrored pattern of a rose-colored flower with grass-green leaves, surrounded by pale blue acanthus leaves, after a design by William Morris. William Morris was a Victorian era poet, novelist, textile designer and an important figure of the British Arts and Crafts Movement. His designs had a medieval-inspired aesthetic and respect for hand-craftsmanship and traditional textile arts. He was the founding figure of Morris & Co., and Kelmscott Press. He was friends to many Pre-Raphaelite artists such as Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
