Light up the night, join the procession, & welcome back the Sun! On the last Tuesday in January, residents of Lerwick and the rest of the Scottish Shetland Islands embrace Up Helly Aa. As a tribute to their Norse ancestry, there are costumes, a fiery torch lit procession, and the a burning of a Viking galley. It's the perfect way for any Scandinavian Scot to celebrate the return of the Sun after the Winter solstice.
