We all know the saying: "There's no substitute for cubic inches". However European racing car manufacturers adopted a different philosophy. They put a small capacity engine in a lightweight car and focus on efficiency and handling, rather than brute torque or horsepower. One of the best examples is possibly the air-cooled 356 from Stuttgart. The famous 911 was very similar, albeit a much more powerful 6 cylinder flat six. Still, compared to American muscle cars, these nimble little 356’s performed well with their small displacement engines. The secret lies in a surprisingly high power-to-weight ratio and efficient German engineering. This led to many victories on the race track, most prominently Le Mans, Nurburgring, Mille Miglia, Carrera Panamericana and Targa Florio. Modern sports- and racing cars apply many of the technical aspects of these early small yet powerful motors. It makes these motoring pioneers true motorsport classics. This gift is for any car lover, collector or restorer who doesn't mind driving around in an old or classic car – no matter how small the engine!
