Kalevipoeg (which means son of Kalev) is Estonia's national epic poem. His parents also feature in our mythology. When Kalev died, his wife Linda carried large rocks to cover his grave, but in so doing, she dropped one. Exhausted and heartbroken, she sat on the rock and cried. She cried so long and so hard that her tears filled an entire lake. This painting is very loosely based on a sculpture dedicated to her, and the skyline of the capital city, Tallinn, as well as the lake (Ülemiste Järv) appear in this artwork.
