Abigail Scott Duniway is the pioneer woman who lead the suffrage movement in the West. She was an author, newspaper editor, and advocate of both Native American rights and those of Chinese decent. She saw the suffrage amendment get defeated in Oregon a total of 5 times--more than any other state-- before it finally passed on the sixth attempt in 1912. The governor himself asked her to sign a proclamation acknowledging her role in the fight for women's right to vote. She was the first woman to register to vote in her county and was given the honor to be the first woman to vote in Oregon.
