Born into slavery, freed by emancipation, she became a well respected journalist, educator and activist. Despite the danger, Ida was outspoken for civil rights, including starting a national anti-lynching campaigns, founded the NAACP, and worked for universal suffrage. She also somehow managed to raise four children during all this but she admitted in her autobiography that it was difficult to have "divided duty."
