Colorized photo from 1909, June 18 Original title: House in which Miss Sigel was killed Photographer: Bain News Location: 782 8th Ave, NY A real slice of life picture. On the left most side is Ladder company 4, they are still in that location, taking up the spot of these two buildings. Next to that is a pawn store, you can tell its pawn related because they use those 3 balls, which is the symbol of pawning stuff. Next to that is a second hand motorcycle shop, the kids are playing with a scale behind the display. The store sells bikes, phonographs and light parts. They also have racing bikes. Above that is a Chinese food restaurant, called Chop Suey, that everyone had to climb a flight of stairs for. And on the top floor, that is where the murder took place. And its the only reason they shot this picture at all. Elsie Sigel (the daughter of a Civil War General), 19 years old, was found strangled in a trunk that belonged to a waiter "William" Leon Ling, who worked in a Chinese restaurant, probably the one he lives over. Sigel had been missing since June 9, she was found on June 18. Because it was his apartment, he was the prime target. But it seems he was having a relationship with her, as he had 35 love letters from her. Now it gets stranger, a man by the name of Chu Gain, the manager of the Port Arthur Restaurant on Mott St., said that he also had love letters from Sigel. He also was threatened that if he didn't break up with her, that the girl would be murdered. She was last seen going to her grandmother's house but never arrived. It was thought that someone was jealous, but the case was never solved. And to this day, you can some times see a young girl in a yellow dress, in front of this very building, hoping someone can solve the case.
