Colorized photo from 1939 Original Title: Even gas stations are on an elaborate scale, resembling hotels Photographer: Marion Post Wolcott Location: Florida A1A Miami Beach, FL When the horse cart was invented, it made travel a little more convenient, it was a lot easier than carrying stuff on your back. Then the automobile came out, and it changed everything. You could go further and see more. As cars progressed, so did roads, interstates were created, letting people visit states if they wanted to. Businesses would pop up along these roads, and in order to attract attention, they would create something weird, just get hook you in. This gas station for example, is actually in the shape of a large lighthouse, you can't see it in this image because this is the gas station side. Interestingly it was compared to a hotel, as they also had strange shapes. You can tell by the plates that they came from far off places. Presently this location is sadly gone, it's been replaced by a SOHO Bay restaurant. For the car enthusiasts, The car on the far right, is a 1938 American Bantam delivery car. The blue one is a Ford model 48, and the beige is a 1938 Oldsmobile.
