Despite coming from a very ordinary provincial background, Horace Wheelwright explored some of the least hospitable extremities of the globe at a time when long-haul travel was still a distant dream. Working as a naturalist and author, there were times when he survived only by hunting or working as a labourer swabbing the decks of cargo ships.
