William Morris Vintage Strawberry Thief Rug - The image beautifying this product is one of William Morris' (1834-1896) most popular designs. The design was created by Morris in 1883 and was inspired by the thrushes which repeatedly stole strawberries from the kitchen garden at his countryside home, Kelmscott Manor, in Oxfordshire, England. The design was intended to be used for curtains or as loose covers on furniture, as well as, draped around walls, a form of interior decoration encouraged by Morris. The design was printed on cotton using the indigo discharge method, an ancient system used for many centuries, mainly in Asia. Strawberry Thief was one of the most expensive printed furnishings available from Morris and Company, yet it became a fixed favorite with clients.
