Minnesota State Capitol, Saint Paul, Minnesota Minnesota State Capitol, located in his capital city, Saint Paul. The building houses the Minnesota Senate, the Minnesota House of Representatives, the Office of the Attorney General and the Office of the Governor. This is the third capitol building of Minnesota. The first burned down in 1881, the second one was completed in 1883, but it was immediately considered to be too small. The State Capitol was built by Cass Gilbert. He designed it based on the Saint Peter's basilica in Rome. The construction began in 1896 and the work was completed in 1905-1906. Minnesotans wanted only Minnesota stone to be used for the building. Even though foreign stone was used for the outside, it is stone from Minnesota that is used in the interior of the building.
