This is a replica of "A Bit of War History: The Recruit" by American painter Thomas Waterman Wood. The painting depicts an African-American man who has shown up at the Provost Marshall General's office to enlist for service in the Union Army during the Civil War. This proud soldier has his weapon hoisted to his shoulder. Art historians have noted that Wood's dignified depiction of an African-American subject was unusual at the time.
