Northern Spotted Owl Strix occidentalis Length 17” Wingspan 40” The proverbial “Canary” in the Pacific Northwest Forests. The Northern Spotted Owl has become the poster child for the protection of old growth forests. Facing extirpation from BC forests, this species needs large tracts of untouched forests in order to survive. The fragmentation of old growth forests has made it impossible for young birds to fly off and find suitable habitat. This has also left them more susceptible to predation and conflict with larger Barred and Great Horned Owls.
