This late 16th century British History painting by William Segar features the portrait of Sir Walter Raleigh, a British aristocrat and explorer, who is best known for having sailed to South America in search of El Dorado, the legendary lost city of gold. After having successfully suppressed an uprising in Munster, Ireland, he was knighted by the Queen, was appointed Captain of the Queen’s Guard, and was rewarded with extensive estates in Ireland.
