- from our Affiliates
This is a picture from the Melk Abbey that is located less then an hour away from Vienna, Austria. It is said to be one of the most impressive sights in Austria. Melk became the home of the Benedictines in 1089, but long before that this hill and cliff was a defensive location on the Danube. The monastery at Melk burned in 1297, 1683 and again in 1735. The current 1736 reconstruction contains some earlier elements. If you go to the abbey right after you pay for your ticket this stair case is your starting point. Photographed by Chuck Raeke
