The Wood Duck, formerly known as Summer Duck or Carolina Duck, is one of the most beautiful waterfowl in North America. The male is known for his striking, colorful display greens, chestnut, black-and-white and a bright red eye. The female Wood Duck is duller in color but has an impressive and oversized teardrop circling the eye. John James Audubon painted this amazing artwork in the early 1800's with watercolor paints and pen-and-ink. The Wood Duck is one of the more favorite ducks for birders and birdwatchers alike.
