The Northern Flicker illustrated in this artwork by John James Audubon features the "yellow-shafted" subspecies of the eastern United States and Canada. The western subspecies is "red-shafted" where red replaces the yellow of the eastern variety. The Northern Flicker is part of the woodpecker family. It's loud "peah" or "peough" calls can be heard throughout area of woodlands and is love by birdwatchers and birders alike.
