John Brown was motivated by his religious convictions to violently attempt to overthrow American slavery. His mission to Harper's Ferry failed in that regard, but the missives he wrote while incarcerated awaiting his trial, conviction, and hanging for treason moved the nation undeniably forward towards its reckoning with slavery via the Civil War. God bless that man. John Brown School of Divinity does not exist in reality nor fiction, but it should.
