The Dome of the Rock, in Jerusalem, Israel, was erected by the Muslim ruler Abd el-Malik in the late 7th century. It is believed by Muslims to be the site from where Muhammad ascended to heaven. It was built on the same site as once stood the Temple of Solomon and the Second Temple. A sacred place for both Jewish and Islamic faiths.
