The only unit of its kind in the US military, they parade in similar uniforms to those worn by Continental Army musicians reminisce of the American Revolution. They were created in 1960 - their uniforms include Colonial style tricorn hats, white wigs, black leather neckstocks, waistcoats, overalls and red greatcoats. They bring an added dignity to official ceremonies. They perform at all White House full honor arrivals ceremonies and Presidential inaugurals. The Drum Major wears a light-infantry cap made of bear fur & leather, and as a badge of distinction, wears a white leather baldric, with drumsticks attached, across his body over his right shoulder. Carrying a spontoon - a weapon carried by infantry officers during the 18th century, he uses it to issue silent commands to the Corps. The music played has been carefully researched from original documents to ensure authenticity.
