Inspired by a Vision from God to become a monk, Saint Cuthbert became a Christian hermit so he could be closer to God. He lived a solitary life of poverty, prayer and contemplation on St.Cuthbert’s Isle and later on Farne Isle. He was reluctant to become a Bishop and it took the request of King Egfrid and Bishop Trumwin to persuade Saint Cuthbert to change his mind. Saint Cuthbert fed the poor and spread the Gospel. Many miracles are associated with Saint Cuthbert. He devoted his life to prayer. He was loved by animals and a monk secretly watched him one night; Saint Cuthbert prayed all night whilst standing in the cold sea waters off the shore of Lindisfarne; when Saint Cuthbert came ashore, Otters dried his feet with their’ fur. Saint Cuthbert also tamed the Eider Ducks on Farne Island and there are Eider Ducks there to this day. Saint Cuthbert was present at the Synod of Whitby, during which different Christian Traditions were discussed; Celtic Christianity and Roman Catholic Christianity. Cuthbert became a bridge between these different Christian traditions.
