The retina is one of the most complex pieces of neural circuitry in the human body, but it is also in some ways stunningly simple. The circuitry allows our cones in particular to interpret color by letting us discriminate between similar shades! Humans have 3, but a funky little sea creature called the Mantis Shrimp has 12, and surprisingly is actually LESS effective at distinguishing color since it doesn’t have all of the cool circuits in its brain like we do!
