This handsome pronghorn antelope buck is a perfect example of this beautiful prairie creature. They are the fastest mammal on the plains by far and can out run the main predator, the coyote, with ease if they are healthy. Their population can be cut severely if a winter is too harsh or a layer of ice covers the ground and they can't get at the small prairie plants and lichen that is their main source of feed. Occasionally they will raid ranchers bales but they don't seem to get the nutrition they need from it and many ranchers will shoot them if they catch them in their cattle feed. This photo was taken in early fall by Flatlandersam in south east Alberta, Canada.
