This year was a busy one for me with a lot of ups and downs. I was struggling to find a theme for this year's calendar; to be honest I thought about just skipping it. But then in early November, when most plants are shutting down and even the Fall display is starting to look worse for the wear of freezing temperatures, a Fall-blooming Camellia in one of my gardens started to flower. And on a lovely, sunny day after a night of rain, I took the photo on the cover of this calendar; and I knew I wanted it to be a feature. The problem was, how to build that into a theme? Finally I realized that in every season there is a bright spot in the garden: a flower, a piece of tree stripped bare, snow in the pines. White is not really a color, but all colors in a beam of light. An artist friend told me that white in the garden creates spots of blankness and, used sparingly, can make the other hues stand out in their own way. And after dark it continues the garden's life with its glow. Many plants native to the mid-Atlantic region where I live have white flowers, not least because they are attractive to bees, who see in a different spectrum than human eyes. So here is my celebration of this Camellia sasanqua and the plants in each season which light up many kinds of darkness.
