The Breakers: Vanderbilt's Summer Home Mouse Pad
- from our Affiliates
The Breakers, located in Newport, Rhode Island and rebuilt by Cornelius Vanderbilt after a fire in 1892, contained rare woods, marble imported from Italy and Africa, mosaics, and architectural elements, such as a fireplace mantel in the library that was imported from France. Vanderbilt was one of the richest industrialists of his time and this summer home was one of the most opulent of the Gilded Age.
