Iris Cristata Dwarf Crested Iris United States native plant A diminutive spreading plant, crested iris rarely exceed four to six inches in height but may form ground covering colonies of many square feet in the marginal zones between woodland and open areas. The range once covered much of the upper south but has become fragmented due to habitat loss. Crested iris is considered threatened, endangered or extirpated in some of the fringe areas of it's former range but remains relatively common in the southern Appalachian mountains.
