Happy Leap Year Day To You Four Seasons Icons Matchboxes Affiliate icon

The reason why we have a leap year is because of the time it takes the Earth to orbit the sun. While there are 365 days in most calendar years, the Earth actually spins 365.24 times to complete one orbit around the sun. This "sidereal" year is slightly longer than the calendar year of 365 days. Because there's an extra quarter of a day in our day, the calendar is reset periodically. If it were not the case, the start dates of seasons would gradually drift by a quarter of a day every year. There is a leap day added every four years except if the year is divisible by 100 and not divisible by 400. In this case, the leap year is skipped. In others words, 2000 was a leap year because it was divisible by 400, but for 2100, 2200, and 2300, the leap year will be skipped. Wish others a "Happy Leap Year Day!" with this matchbox featuring the Earth's change of seasons as it rotates around the sun.
