"Giant Van Gogh's Sunflowers Artwork and Water Tower, Goodland, Kansas" by Catherine Sherman. Two tall structures greet visitors to Goodland, Kansas. One is a giant reproduction of one of Vincent Van Gogh's Sunflowers paintings: the other is a water tower bearing the town's name. Wouldn't it be fun if Goodland painted sunflowers on its water tower! When you are driving on Interstate Highway 70 in western Kansas, be sure to exit to visit Goodland, Kansas, to see the giant painting, which stands 80 feet tall on its easel. To get an idea of how large this painting is, look for the tiny sparrow perched on the top right edge of the painting. According to the website RoadsideAmerica.com, Goodland boasts "the World's Largest Easel (or at least the largest along a U.S. Interstate). The 80-foot tall easel displays a 32x24-foot representation of one of Van Gogh's seven "Sunflower" paintings. The giant Van Gogh painting is about a half-mile off of I-70, along Hwy 24 near the center of town. Kansas is the "Sunflower State," and Goodland is at the center of the local sunflower industry. The trade group, Sunflowers USA, raised the $150,000 necessary to build the easel after an artist pitched the idea to the group in 2000. The Easel was dedicated in August 2001, during Goodland's Sunflower Festival. The easel is built of steel, weighing 45,000 pounds. The supports are sunk 35 feet into the ground.
