"Kilauea Lighthouse on Kauai" by Catherine Sherman. Kīlauea Lighthouse is located on Kīlauea Point on the island of Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi in the Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. Kīlauea Point, a narrow, lava peninsula protruding from the northern shore of Kauaʻi, was purchased from the Kīlauea Sugar Plantation Company in 1909 for one US dollar. The Kīlauea Lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on On October 18, 1979. On the grounds are several Hawaiian geese, also known as nēnē or nene in the Hawaiian language. They are the world's rarest goose and once dropped to a population of only fifty.
