Dante Gabriel Rossetti - Salutation of Beatrice, 1880-82. Rossetti was inspired by Vita Nuova, a book by Dante Alighieri where he tells about his love for Beatrice. In the background Dante himself, comforted by the red-robed figure of Love. My lady looks so gentle and so pure / When yielding salutation by the way / That the tongue trembles and has naught to say / And the eyes, which fain would see, may not endure.
