Thomas Jefferson: Architect, lawyer, writer and the 3rd President of the United States. Born in 1743 in Albemarle County, Virginia, he studied at the College of William and Mary and became a student of law. A firm believer in the strength of republican government, he remains an icon of liberty and individual rights to this day. He died on July 4, 1826, within hours of his friend and fellow patriot John Adams. The quote, 'If there be any among us who would wish to dissolve this Union or to change its republican form, let them stand undisturbed as monuments of the safety with which error of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it.' is from his inaugural address on March 4, 1801.
