A Sunday on La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat Painting - A beautiful French Afternoon - painted in 1884, showing a wonderful afternoon in a Paris park, along the banks of the French river. This famous pointillism painting shows different social classes harmoniously sitting and enjoying the sun and the outdoors. There's a couple strolling along with an umbrella and their monkey (!), people lying on the grass looking out at the river. One man is wearing a top hat, another a bicycle cap. A woman in a long dress and big hat is seen fishing at the bank, people running, people smooching, and many people just hanging out. Boaters in the background are rowing and sailing. A Sunday on La Grande Jatte is a scene similar to any Sunday today, only the people are wearing different clothing, and certainly there are fewer monkeys strolling with them! About Georges Seurat - Georges Seurat was known for his post-impressionist work. His was a painting technique called pointillism, where the brush stroke was just a dot on the page. He was from Paris, and experimented with color and science, taking small dots, and applying them together so they eye would optically blend the colors.
