Vintage French Poster of the Eiffel Tower The Grande Fete in French means the "big fair" -- and apparently they had one in 1983, four years after the Exposition Universelle of 1889, which was the World's Fair held in Paris, France from May to October 1889. The Eiffel Tower was finished during the World's Fair, so by this Grande Fete four years later, you could finally journey to the very top of the Eiffel Tower, which you could not yet do when the World's Fair opened, because the top wasn't yet finished. The Eiffel Tower was the entrance arch to the Fair. Built by Gustave Eiffel, the Eiffel Tower was built with wrought iron. In this poster, the coloring is in rich reds, yellows, and blacks, and people are jumping off of the Eiffel Tower (hopefully into a diving pool!) and there's a large yellow helium balloon in the foreground where people are watching the people dive off the Eiffel Tower through their telescopes. On the side, there are sideshow events show, such as Roman fighters, clowns, and other sideshow tricks.
