The Turtle Dove, also called the Mourning Dove, was called the Carolina Pigeon by John James Audubon in his early 1800s Birds of America book. Audubon birds are studies of all American birds that John James Audubon documented and illustrated in their natural habitats. Audubon is known fopr his color-plate book entitled The Birds of America (1827–1839). The illustrations are considered one of the finest ornithological works ever created, and the images are widely collected. The image of the Carolina Pigeon was plate 26, and shows mourning doves in an old rose bush with white flowers.
