One of 200 deputy marshals hired by Judge Issac Parker (The Hangin Judge of Ft. Smith Arkansas) to clean up western Arkansas and Oklahoma territory which was arguably the most dangerous and lawless place in the United States at the time. A haven for ruthless outlaws. Bass made 3000 arrests. Killed 14 men. It is said that Rooster Cogburn’s character in “True Grit” was based on him. Bass was also believed to be the original “Lone Ranger”. Shot at but never hit his entire career . He stood 6’2”. Belle Starr reportedly turned herself in when she heard that Bass Reeves had a warrant for her.
