Vintage illustration wild animal rodents design featuring a group of dassie rats in the wilderness by Cuthbert Edmund Swan. From "My First Book of Animals" by Lena Dalkeith, c. 1918. The dassie rat (Petromus typicus) is an African rodent found among rocky outcroppings. The name "dassie" means "hyrax" in Afrikaans. Petromus means "rock mouse" and dassie rats are one of many rodents sometimes called rock rats. Dassie rats feed mostly on grasses, but will sometimes eat leaves, fruits and seeds.
