Vintage illustration marine life animal design featuring a variety of under sea corals. Illustrations by Jean Gabriel Pretre from the Dictionnaire D'Histoire Naturelle by Charles Orbigny. 1849 The group includes the important reef builders that inhabit tropical oceans and secrete calcium carbonate to form a hard skeleton. The shape and size of coral mostly depends on the species. Some are hard and pointy, while others are soft and rounded. The shape of coral reef colonies also depends on where they live. In oceans with strong waves coral tends to grow into robust mounds or flattened shapes. In seas with more sheltered areas, the same species of coral might grow into more intricate shapes with delicate branching patterns.
