MICHELANGELO'S DELPHIC SIBYL TISSUE PAPER
One of Michelangelo's most celebrated artwork from the fresco painting of the Sistine Chapel. The latin word Sibyl comes from the ancient greek word for prophetess. There were many sibyls in the ancient world, but the Delphic Sibyl was considered one of the first "far-seeing" Sibyls. Her story goes back a long way. She was said to have started making prophecies, chanting proclamations about future events, from the so-called "Sibyl Rock", a natural rock rostrum located near the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. She was admired and revered, her revelations were on track and her prophetic gift ensured her fame throughout the ancient world. Typical of Michelangelo and Italian art to mix mythology and Biblical characters in their works.
