CHOP SUEY _ EDWARD HOPPER VINTAGE MODERN ART WRAPPING PAPER Affiliate icon

An earlier of Edward Hopper's paintings and considered my many to be his best work. The key figures in ‘Chop Suey’ are two women dining alone at a restaurant, a purposeful representation by Hopper demonstrating the fundamental changes in American society. Up until the 20’s, such behavior would have been construed as inappropriate, but the rise of feminism in the mid-1920’s contributed to gradual changes in such perceptions and restaurants began to post signs in their windows ‘Tables for Ladies’. The dinners and restaurants of Chinatown also became increasingly popular at lunchtime for the NY working woman. The 1929 painting Chop Suey was purchased by a private collector in 1973 for $180,000 and was sold at auction at his death in 2018 for nearly $92,000,000 setting the record for the most expensive of Hopper's paintings to date.
