Officially titled "El Jaleo", Sargent did a smaller painting of a single dancer called "The Spanish Dancer" which was a study for this larger work. It was painted at a time when Paris was experiencing a fascination Spain and the Spanish culture called Hispanism. The painting was introduced to the Paris Salon in 1882 and was an instant success which helped to launch Sargent's career.
