Arizona USA Teddy Bear Cholla Cactus At Sunset 1 Card
This greeting card features a beautiful photo of a Teddy Bear Cholla Cactus (Cylindropuntia bigelovii) at sunset on the Treasure Loop Trail in the Lost Dutchman State Park in the Superstition Wilderness in Apache Junction, Arizona. This species of cacti are related to the larger Chain Fruit Cholla Cactus (Opuntia fulgida), which is the tallest of the cholla cactuses. They are also both known as the Jumping Cholla because the spiny segments seem to "jump" off the cactus with the lightest touch, so beware! The barbed spines are very painful and difficult to remove, so it's a good idea to bring a comb and tweezers with you just in case you have a close encounter with one. The easiest way to remove a cholla joint is to place the comb between the joint and your skin and quickly jerk it away. It can fly several feet away when doing this, so make sure no one is in the line of fire when you do this! Remove individual spines with the tweezers. The Teddy Bear Cholla is so called because in certain lights its pale yellow spines appear fuzzy. Don't be fooled! These cacti have a single trunk with densely packed side branches on the upper part of the plant. The flowers are yellow-green and the fruit usually contains no fertile seeds. Most new plants arise from segments of the plant that have broken off and taken root. Teddy Bear Cholla grow abundantly in the lower parts of the Mojave Desert and in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona and Mexico. Often you may find whole forests of them. They seem to prefer rocky soils the most. This card is also available in a horizontal format.
