In 1953, the Peach Blossom was named as the official State Flower of Delaware. The Peach Blossom symbolizes longevity or the desire for long life, the sweetness of life and loving life. In the late 1800's, Delaware's peach orchards contained nearly a million peach trees, yielding a crop worth thousands of dollars at that time. Though most of us think of Georgia or South Carolina, at one time, Delaware was known as the "Peach State". Unfortunately, in the latter part of the 19th century, a peach blight brought collapse to the industry and, in the early 1900's, many peach farmers faced bankruptcy. In North Carolina, we're not nearly so far north as Delaware and we have roughly twenty peach trees on the property. They are around five or six years old and we have yet to harvest the first peach. In our case, false springs would bring on early budding only to have a subsequent frost kill any developing fruits. Though I am still hopeful, I have come to regard ours as "ornamental" trees. But this design is not just a tribute to peaches or their blooms, it also pays homage to our FIRST state, Delaware. It's pretty distinctive, being the first official state of the United States. In terms of size, Delaware is the 49th largest (out of 50) or the 2nd smallest state in the union. At it's outer edges, Delaware is 96 miles long and 35 miles wide. Though geographically small, Delaware has given this country many gifts and many famous people. Though born in Pennsylvania, Former Vice-President Joe Biden hailed from Delaware. Bob Marley's son, Stephen, was born in Wilmington as was actress Elisabeth Shue and actress Valerie Bertinelli. This delightful design, celebrating the VERY FIRST official state in the United States, offers an outline of the state of Delaware, filled with their state flowers, lovely Peach Blossoms. This is overlaid by a deep rose "Delaware" and framed in a coordinating, dimensionalized merlot frame, crowned with a single peach blossom in the corner.
