In the 19th century a poolroom was a horse race betting parlor. Pool tables were installed so the bettors could pass time between horse races. Billards, or pool, is the descendant of a game similar to croquet that was played in 15th-century Europe. Though we don't know for sure, it is strongly suspected that billiards came to America with Dutch and English settlers. By the 1700's, skilled cabinet makers were crafting beautiful tables, though the equipment was, otherwise, quite primitive. Fifteen-ball pool came on the scene in the late 1800's and grew in popularity through the 1940's. Billiards was revived in 1961 with the release of the movie THE HUSTLER. It enjoyed another surge in the mid 1980's with the release of the movie sequel, COLOR OF MONEY. Since that time, there has been an evolution of the environs in which we find pool tables -- they're in restaurants and night clubs and sports bars, allowing pool to find a modern audience and new generations of enthusiasts. This marvelous design features the bold, black EIGHT ball . . . making this tablefetti an excellent choice for 8th birthdays, anniversaries . . . or any other notable eighth. The reverse is a coordinating solid black featuring text you may personalize to your special "eighth" event.
