Big cities and their lights are not really an issue in Idaho so night brings a brighter and more beautiful starry sky than in most places. From skiing to fishing and white-water-rafting, Idaho is an excellent destination choice for those that love adventure in the out of doors. It's also a great place to go if you prefer quiet possibilities of finding gold or gems. There are numerous places in Idaho where you can pan for gold, garnet, opal, jade, topaz, tourmaline and many other gems and minerals. That would be, of course, why it's nickname is "The Gem State". As you may know, Idaho is the number one producer of potatoes in the nation. But Idaho contributes much more than just potatoes: milk, cattle, hay, wheat, sugarbeets, barley, dry beans, corn, onions, hops, lentils . . . they are in the top ten in production for nearly 30 of the commodities produced. Idaho even has three approved wine-grape growing regions. The state vegetable, as you might suspect, is the potato. The state horse is the Appaloosa and the state fish is the Cutthroat Trout. An amazing 63% of Idaho is public land which is particularly impressive as Idaho is the 13th largest state in the United States. This wonderful design pays homage to our amazing 43rd state.
