James Tissot Portsmouth postcard. Oil painting on canvas from 1877. French painter James Tissot spent much of his life in England painting gorgeous works examining Victorian culture. Portsmouth (The Gallery of H.M.S. Calcutta) is a work depicting two young women and a young sailor lounging on the railing of a boat in harbor. The two young women wear elegant Victorian seaside dresses with tightly laced corsets and full bustles. One woman wears a large yellow bow while the other wears baby blue bows, both wear fancy hats, and one hold a very large fan. A number of deck chairs sit empty behind them as they lean on the railing, and the sailor coolly holds his head in his hand. A beautiful gift for fans of Tissot, Victorian art, vintage boat paintings, and nineteenth-century realism.
