Goya Witches’ Sabbath print. Oil painting on canvas from 1798. Spanish painter Francisco Goya frequently drew on occult and mystical themes within his work. Witches’ Sabbath is one of Goya’s most famous paintings due to its dark subject matter and sense of the macabre. A coven of witches sits gathered around the figure of the devil portrayed as a goat with tremendously large horns adorned with a laurel of oak leaves. A child is being consecrated to the goat while multiple skeletons can be seen in the background. Overhead a hoard of bats flits above an inverted crescent moon.
